in the design studio
Balancing the intricate movement of the burl grain with the architectural precision of its base, the Martis Drink Table embodies the quiet strength and elegance of Lake Tahoe’s towering pines.
The dense, highly figured burl bases—each weighing over twenty pounds—were harvested from an old-growth walnut orchard in the Yosemite region. Originally intended to be used for guitars, production halted and we were fortunate enough to acquire these remarkable pieces and give them new life as the foundation for this table.
Each burl base is individually lathe-turned by hand in the artist’s workshop, revealing the intricate patterns within the wood. A local metalsmith then hand-hammers the ½" steel rod, adding subtle artisanal texture and connecting the base to the top.
The tabletop is crafted from live-edge English walnut and features a refined lip around the edge—an understated detail that highlights the natural character of the wood while offering a functional surface for drinks.
Grounded and architectural, the Martis Side Table adds warmth, texture, and material depth to a living space, pairing beautifully beside a lounge chair or at the end of a sofa.
